Goldene Schlummer-Milch | Golden slumber milk

Sunday May 29th, 2016

Golden slumber milk

There is one thing you can count on in our house: when dinner is almost eaten, one of the kids will suddenly look up, get all excited and and shout out: “slumber milk!”

And in most cases, one of the grown ups will get up, go to the kitchen and prepare the desired night-time drink. It’s a wonderfully warm combination of cinnamon, turmeric, ginger and cardamom. Ayurvedic cusinie has known about the love between milk and turmeric for along time. And some time ago the golden milk has started to get noticed in our neck of the woods, too. At first in some blogs, then in the first cafes.

The thing that turns the whole thing golden, as a colour but also in terms of preciousness, is turmeric. Turmeric is incredibly healthy and has countless benefits for your body. (Read more here)

There is no “one” recipe, everyone has their own version. And now we want to add our favourite combination to the collection. We always add some cashews. Cashews contain a lot of tryptophane, which our brain turns into serotonin and helps you sleep tight – thus our name… Also, they make the whole deal even creamier!

For 2 small cups

200 ml milk (Tigernut milk, almond milk or cashew milk work best)
1 date (or 2 if your using unsweetend milk)
ca 0.5 cm fresh turmeric (unpeeled, if organic)
1 capsule of cardamom (only seeds)
1 tsp. cinnamon
a small piece of ginger (according to taste)
some freshly ground pepper (increases the effect of the turmeric)
1 Tbsp. coconut butter
2 Tbsp. activated cashews

Now add to your most powerful blender and blend until warm (90 seconds should do it). If you don’t have one of the more powerful ones, use your regular blender. In that case, just heat up the milk in a pot and possibly strain to get out the last pieces of cashews or dates.

Now, enjoy … and fall ssleep! Right, I meant, put the kids to bed…
