Green Smoothie: Grundrezept | Basic recipe

Saturday June 4th, 2016

Green Smoothie

Green smoothies are a must in this blog! They have become the symbol of a healthy vegan diet. But they are also the ideal hiding place for all the less appreciated ingredients, basically the archetype of my hiding-approach.
You can put so much goodness into them, for your kids and for yourself! Raw green leaves are usually not amongst a child’s favourite foods. And vegan kids are no different here!
But in the form a smoothie they love and get their good share of chlorophyll!
When you’re new to the whole smoothie thing, start with using only spinach as your green ingredient. It doesn’t taste of anything, promise! This way your kids can get used to the colour and learn that it’s not dangerous at all!
You favourite spices and herbs can also work miracles and are often under-appreciated.

An alltime-favourite in our house is this combination:

1 apple or pear
1 small banana
1/2 orange
1 handful spinach
2-3  leaves of kale (seasonal and optional,  a bit of savoy would be another option)
2 dates (or more, depending on your need for sweetness)
1 tsp. lucuma
1 tsp. bee pollen
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 capsules of cardamom (only the seeds, not the capsule)
1 small piece of fresh turmeric (0,5 cm or more according to taste)
filtered water

Blend with your most powerful blender, using the green smoothie programme.

It’s wonderfully creamy and we think cinnamon and cardamom work wonderfully, even in the summer! To prevent the smoothie from getting to warm, use some ice cubes instead of the water. Or for emergencies frozen spinach is always an option.

If you have been living in smoothie-land for a bit longer, you can add your favourite superfoods like chlorella or moringa. And step by step, increase the green-content, also by adding valuable wild herbs, like dandelion or nettles. At some point your kids will run into the garden to get it…

It’s really beneficial to integrete these small green friends in your diet. You will soon enjoy making up your own recipes. Just get creative! You know best what you like, which fruit and which herbs and spices you love. Another lovely combination is orange-pineapple-vanilla. And if you stick to spinach for the beginning, it won’t affect the taste.

In principle, it’s obviously best to get to green content to a really high level and to change the kind of leaves you use regularly to get a wide range of nutrients.

But it’s just as important that the smoothies taste good, too. Enjoying your food is an important part of a wholesome diet!

It’s important to drink the smoothie on a relatively empty stomach. This way you can really benefit from the nutrients and their digestion won’t be slowed down by other things still “sitting around”…

So either as a breakfast or after an eating-break of at least 2 hours… we, for example, often enjoy it after naptime. So, basically: Now!
